Street Poetry in Atlanta's Little Five Points

In March 2010, I held an open photo shoot in front of Criminal Records, in Atlanta's Little Five Points. The shoot was for the Atlanta chapter of my I...I'm Sky High project. One of the shoot participants was Maurice. He was chilling around the spot, saw me and my crew setting up for the shoot, and came over to see what was up. When he approached us, he introduced himself as a street poet and asked us to give him three words and in return he gave us a freestyle poem based on those three words.

You know how sometimes, when you meet someone, you instantly know that they are a very special kind of person? Maurice made an impression on me.

Fast forward a year and some change, I was back in Atlanta's Little Five Points, about to get into a shoot with the amazing hip hop crew, Collective Efforts, when I spotted Maurice hanging out in front of a store. Carlton and I stopped to chop it up and reminded him of our shoot a year ago. He didn't pass up the opportunity to freestyle for us, except this time he asked for five words. We gave him: collective, vision, photography, hype and Toronto. Since we included the word "collective", we waited until the CE Crew arrived so they could hear it too. This is what Maurice gave us...

He left out "vision", but we're not mad at it. If you're ever in the A, stop by Little Five and check for Maurice. You'll be glad that you did.

Toronto Loves Kicks

"Toronto Loves Kicks (TLK) is a movement dreamt up by two ordinary young men with an extraordinary passion to empower the youth of today to become the leaders of tomorrow by using an extremely creative empowerment tool known as sneakers. This unique brand and organization strictly caters to the often misunderstood, yet incredibly influential urban and sneaker culture.

One of the main goals of the TLK movement is to become a valuable resource to the community by creating events that illustrate signs of change. It is with this in mind that TLK has decided to host “United We Sole” a buy/sell/trade Sneaker Expo that will bring together people of this culture from all races, ages, gender and class. The event will feature over thirty vendors selling some of the most rare and exclusive sneakers and/or merchandise on the market. Sneakers will be showcased from the past, present and future and will attract sneaker collectors from both the major urban centres and the smaller markets where events of this nature do not exist. Most importantly “United We Sole” will positively unite the mainstream urban culture with the lesser known sneaker sub-culture, blending the two; helping to eventually eliminate the boundaries of race, age, gender and class."

This is going to be a huge event, finally uniting sneakerheads of Toronto. Be there!

New Ink!

It's been several years since I've had any ink done. Last year, if you would've asked me if I wanted any more tatts, I likely would've said no. That was, until a concept for a design came up in my mind a few months back and I fell in love with the idea. I searched around for some reference photos and researched Toronto tattoo shops. I finally found an artist I felt good about: Alie K. at Adrenaline. She knew exactly what I was after and came up with a better design than I ever could have imagined. I'm so ready for shorts weather.

I caught Mac Miller's concert at the Opera House in Toronto tonight.

Damn.

I've been to A LOT of shows in my day so I feel experienced enough to say that the concert was one of the LIVEST music events I've ever been to. The show sold out the original venue and was later moved to a larger venue to accommodate the demand and was sold out yet again. 300+ fans showed up to his meet & greet at Livestock today. I think that's a fair indication of the love this city has for the 18-year-old emcee from Pittsburgh. After witnessing the energy he puts into a live performance and the love he shows his fans, I've got a new respect for him.

If for some reason you've slept on Mac Miller, cop his mixtape K.I.D.S. and stay in the know: his album Best Day Ever is set for release March 11th.

The cliche goes: "a picture is worth a thousand words". To me, a picture is worth a thousand emotions. When you look at this photo, what do you see?

Shredded jeans? Bright red kicks? BK sweatshirt? Gritty subway?

I didn't take this photo with the intention of anyone but myself seeing it. When I aimed my iPhone down and clicked the camera, I actually wanted to capture the way I was feeling.

I had spent the day in Bushwick choppin it up with Andy at Post BMX Shop, walking down Flushing, eating soul food, talking to strangers, getting a pedicure and sneaker shopping...all while listening to a playlist I'd put together for a day just like that one.

Mos Def's "Pistola" was coming through my headphones when I snapped this while waiting for the L train at Morgan Ave. station. It was a perfect day. Walking around Brooklyn with a smile on my face, mad love in my heart, a special someone on my mind, and good music in my ears.

That's what I see when I look at this photo.

Gypsy Flesh: South Bronx Sweetheart

On July 6th, Gypsy reached out, asking about a photo shoot and the next time I was going to be in NYC. She sent me a link to her music and after hearing "My Philosophy", I knew I had to make a shoot happen.

Gypsy spits raw truth and does it all in her own way. Straight from the heart, she lives and breathes hip hop. She's on the come-up and she's doing it without wearing candy-coloured wigs or exposing 90% of her body. She is a strong, intelligent woman and I am honored to have photographed her in New York City 2 weeks ago.

Gypsy was raised in South Bronx. When I asked her for location suggestions, the decision was made. After the shoot I came up with a nickname for her. You've heard of Va$htie - "Downtown's Sweetheart", right? I dubbed Gypsy "South Bronx Sweetheart". She earned it. After spending an afternoon together, I witnessed firsthand the respect and love her community has for her. When we walked down the street, people of all ages would stop her to show love, whether it be to give props on her music or to ask how her family is doing. Gypsy always returned the love, smiles and respect. She is truly a warm and beautiful person with a glowing personality and refreshing perspective on the past, present and future of hip hop.

Keep an eye on Gypsy Flesh. You can find her in the streets, in the studio or opening shows for the likes of Rick Ross.

Today I had the honor of meeting Kim Phuc Phan Thi. Never heard of her? Maybe you remember seeing this Pulitzer Prize award-winning photo:

This photo was taken by Nick Ut, of a 9 year old Kim, just after she was badly burned by an American-ordered napalm bombing in Vietnam.

This morning Kim explained the events that occurred that day, June 8, 1972, and how every day since has shaped her life and made her the woman she is now.

I am richer for having heard her inspiring story today.

Exactly a year ago today, I received an email from an emcee sharing his new mixtape with me. I downloaded the tracks right away, listened to them in full, and hit him right back with my thoughts. I loved his stuff. What resonated with me was his honesty. He had seen and been through a lot in his life but instead of spitting gritty, angst, he communicated nothing but positivity and promise.

In March of this year, I flew to Atlanta, GA to meet with Josh and his good friends, Photographers: Kari and Carlton Mackey. If you've been following my blog for a minute, you may recall this post.

I said it then and I'll say it again:

"I arrived a stranger and departed as family."

Dear Ray Charles: Happy Birthday

My Dad taught me a lot of things in my lifetime so far. I'm forever grateful for that.

Of everything my Dad taught me, however, the thing I hold nearest and dearest is the appreciation of truly great and passionate music. As a young Daddy's girl, I remember riding shotgun in his pickup truck, from our house outside of town, down the gravel roads to wherever we were headed, always listening to music. Whether it was the oldies station or an old country music cassette, he always knew every single lyric. My Dad is one of the biggest music lovers I've ever met. He passed that love onto me. I have the ability to learn song lyrics quickly and am easily overwhelmed by emotional and honest songs.

On a weekend visit to my Dad and Stepmom's house around Christmas time, we sat down to watch the movie, "Ray". Dad had the stereo system all the way turned up and naturally, we sang along to all the songs. I had seen the movie several times and just knew he would love it. After it ended, we had a very memorable discussion about the current state of music and the cruciality of a songwriter having the ability to tell a story of importance.

The following month, among other things, I gave him Ray Charles' Greatest Hits double album for his birthday. A week later, Dad was driving me from our hometown to the airport in Regina, where I was about to catch a flight to Los Angeles, then onto Atlanta and finally another flight to Toronto where I was moving. All these years later, as a 27 year old woman I sat shotgun, in my Dad's pickup listening to Ray Charles' Greatest Hits. I instantly had a feeling of déjà vu. I was the little Daddy's girl again and we were sharing our connection through beautiful, honest and soulful music while driving down the flat, vast Saskatchewan land.

I've been a hip hop fan since my brother and I used to watch Yo! Mtv Raps after school. Dad and I won't ever see eye to eye on hip hop. I know that for a fact. But, we will always have a mutual love for the soulful classics, like Ray.

Have you ever heard Ray's cover of The Beatles' "Yesterday"? If not, watch this. I can't listen to it without getting misty-eyed. Every time I hear "Georgia On My Mind", I get butterflies. I even have the song on vinyl.

Happy Birthday, dear Ray Charles. Thank you for sharing your music with us. Your music will live on forever and ever. You weren't by any means a saint but you did exactly what you were meant to do with the incredible gift that you were blessed with: you made music that has touched the hearts of music lovers everywhere. Rest in peace, Ray Charles. When I'm 90 years old, even if my memory doesn't serve me the way it does now, I pray that your music will take me back to the days of sitting shotgun in my Dad's pickup, simply loving great music.

The Lytics are a hip hop group from Winnipeg, Manitoba. I first heard them a couple days after I moved to Toronto this past March. They had a show at Rancho Relaxo...killed it...so I bought the album from one of the guys outside the bar after their performance.

106 & York Urban Arts Festival

106 & York is a multi-disciplinary urban arts festival that showcases some of Toronto’s finest young talent in music, fashion, dance and spoken word.

Saturday night I made the trip up to North York to check out the sights and sounds of the festival. The stage was graced with incredible emerging artists, who one-by-one, inhabited the T-Dot pride and invoked strong recognition of the talent we have right here in our city.

The musicians, dancers and entertainers were warmly received by a young crowd which was refreshing to see. Having young people in our community support urban arts will keep it alive and aid its growth. Shout outs to the organizers and all the artists. See you next year!

In May I had the honor of meeting and interviewing the legendary photographer, Martha Cooper at her New York City home for C.O.P. Magazine. Martha is internationally recognized for having documented the emerging New York hip hop and graffiti scene in the 70s and 80s. She's had several books published, including Subway Art, which was recently re-released in a special 25th anniversary hardcover edition.

Venice Art Crawl

Last month while strolling through Venice Art Crawl in Venice Beach, CA, I had the pleasure of meeting a local artist, Douglas La Marche.

I bought his Tupac print and he hit me with a freestyle!

I wish I would have had more time to talk to Douglas. Since my return to Toronto, I came across an incredible interview with him on Citizen LA. Click here for the full interview.

'When La Marche was a kid named "Doug" he was nicknamed "Pidougio" because of his affinity for Picasso. "The biggest artistic influence on my life," he says. "Picasso gave everyone permission to do things their own way," he adds emphatically. "For four hundred years the French schools made the greatest Artists in the world do everything meticulously a certain way. Any deviation of it and you failed. And do we remember any of them? No, we only remember the ones like Matisse and Picasso who were kicked out."'

My Mom has given me plenty of valuable advice throughout my life. However, the one piece I've never listened to is "Don't talk to strangers." My life has constantly been enriched by talking to strangers. Be it in the lineup at the supermarket, on the subway or at Venice Art Crawl.

When I was at the International Hip Hop Festival in Rotterdam, Fash was staying at the same hotel as me and the Female Sneaker Fiend crew. My friend JenJen and I ended up running into him down the block. We chilled on a bench and talked sneakers, music and travel. He did some free-styling and even mentioned that he has plans to write a book. Stay tuned. I have a feeling that Fashawn's got A LOT of heat in store for us.

Beautiful.

Now, I know I'm not the only one who is anxiously awaiting Shyne's return. He's been away for such a long time.

Shyne was born in Belize City, Belize and the reason he's been away for so long is due to an unfortunate event that took place back in December 1999. Shyne was out in a Manhattan club with Diddy and J.Lo (Remember? They dated. Man, that feels like eons ago!) and was involved in a shooting which injured 3 people.

Shyne was charged with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment. He was sentenced on June 1, 2001 and released on October 6, 2009. However, shortly following his release he was snatched up by US Immigration and deported back to Belize on February 16, 2010. He is still living in Belize, where this video was shot, and continues to fight for US residency.

Pre-incarceration, he was signed to Bad Boy Records but is now on Def Jam. Still waiting for Guess Who to drop...

International Hip Hop Festival

When I'm absent from the blog for a minute, I promise I'm doing something productive. Put that on everything. I'll be straight with you though. Life keeps getting busier, but better, every day. I'm really in love with life and all it's dope surprises right now. Gratitude on a hundred thousand trillion.

My trip to The Netherlands for the International Hip Hop Festival was amazing, from arrival to departure. Me and the FSF crew were shown so much love. I met so many really genuine, ill people. Each day was fresh and even though we were always on the go, I was really able to enjoy every minute of the trip and soak everything up. The sights, the smells, the sounds. Everything.

I've posted 102 images on a public Facebook album that you are more than welcome to check out. You don't even need an account to just have a look.

Whenever people ask me which of the 21 countries I've traveled to is my most favorite, they are often very surprised when I answer "The United States". Not Italy? Not Australia? Nope.

America.

This usually leads to a long conversation, essentially me providing the reasons behind my selection. My family and I have been taking road trips down south since I was pretty young and every time we crossed the border I was overwhelmed with excitement. Even though we share the same continent, so many things are different: the accents, the food, the stores, the entire vibe in general. It was so evident to me even as a little kid. On my very first visit to the States my parents took us to Mount Rushmore, Cosmos Mystery Area, Reptile Gardens, Piggly Wiggly (haha) and everything in between. Okay, back to Piggly Wiggly for sec. Seriously...as I walked down the cereal aisle with my brothers, our mouths gaping open in awe, I could not believe the ridiculously amazing cereal selection they had! Count Chocula...Booberry! Dope!!

As an adult I've made quite a few trips back. Most notably to: Los Angeles, New York City, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Atlanta. I've felt at home in every one of these cities. Okay, except maybe Vegas. If I ever stayed there longer than a week I'd be broke and well, probably a mess.

My main argument is that all 50 states differ so much from each other, it's like having 50 countries in one. I could go on and on about particular experiences and stories of the incredible, warm and kind people I've met. I've always really loved and admired the way Americans have so much love and pride and respect for the cities they live in.

Nothing beats the feeling I get when I arrive at LAX, see the smiling face of my best friend Tina and look up at those palm trees. Or, when I look beyond the palm trees and buildings to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood sign. And I'll never forget my first time walking onto the Brooklyn Bridge. Butterflies.

Big shout outs to my USA fam: Tina in LA, A-Money in NYC, Carlton, Kari and Joshua in Atlanta, and Lori in Boston!

International Hip Hop Festival

On July 14th I will be boarding a plane from Toronto to Amsterdam. I've been there once before, back in 2004 (didn't plan for that to rhyme) but this upcoming trip is for something MUCH bigger than sightseeing.

The International Hip Hop Festival and World BBoy Classic will take place in Rotterdam on July 16, 17 and 18 and I'll be joining JenJen from Miami and Lori from Boston to represent Female Sneaker Fiend in a booth at the event.

We will have a photo booth set up where I'll be shooting all the festival's female sneaker fiends for the upcoming book Girls Got Kicks by Lori Lobenstine and Amanda Lopez. There are more shoots planned to take place in Amsterdam including one with the internationally renowned B-Girl Aruna Vermeulen.

Kid Sis Run Sh#t, Don't Hold Me

NXNE music festival came hard in Toronto. With so much incredible live music happening, I'll admit that it was tough to decide between late night shows and rough early mornings at work or an early night at home and fresh eyes in the morning. Yup, I definitely compromised my love for a good night's sleep and checked out some shows instead. Sunday night I left work at 8 bells and beetled straight down to Dundas Square to catch the free De La Soul concert. The crowd was massive and ready for some De La classics. And did they deliver! Their set included the bigs: 'Much More', 'Me Myself and I, Buddy', 'Stakes is High'.

I made moves from Dundas Square to Wrongbar to catch Kid Sister's second show of the day. She opened her set with 'Right Hand High' and the crowd went aaaaaape!

Sidebar: You already KNOW the first thing I checked out from my front row position was her nails. She had black sparkly, oval shaped joints. Yup, matching toes.

The Chi-Town kid's set included all her bangers. It's great when you see one of your favorite artists live and you leave their show feeling 100% content that they performed all the jams you've kept on high rotation. For me that was 'Pro Nails', 'Control', 'Daydreaming', 'Beeper' and 'Get Fresh'.

I loved how Kid Sis was so comfortable and relaxed on stage (besides having some unfortunate mic probs off the jump). Girl was straight up adjusting her leggings and even stopped to point out a food stain (ketchup?) on her thigh. At one point she shouted out to the sweaty crowd who were all getting their dance on, something along the lines of, ...."you don't need to go to the gym ladies...just come to one of my shows. F#ck skinny bitches!"

She would definitely be right at home with my crew.

For a lot of people, unofficial Drake Day arrived on June 2nd. I can't front, I was one of those heads. I'll be buying the album today though. Do the right thing and support Canadian hip hop!

Shad - Rose Garden

N.Y. State of Mind

As I mentioned in my previous post, I went down to NYC on Wednesday to interview Martha Cooper for C.O.P. Magazine. It was my first trip to the Big Apple. I've travelled a lot but somehow I've never been led there. Sooo many heads had told me that it's definitely my kinda spot and that I'd probably never want to leave.

They were right.

I met up with C.O.P. Mag's editor, Erika, early Wednesday morning and headed to Clinton St. Baking Company for some of those legendary pancakes and a peanut butter chocolate milkshake. (Do it. Highly recommended.)

After brunch we hit up Dave's Quality Meat to get my NYC sneaker game up. Check my post @ Female Sneaker Fiend for more info on that jaunt. Post-sneaker shopping, we took the subway to Union Square to feel it out and to cop some flowers for Martha from the market there. We met Martha Cooper at her sweet apartment for an incredible interview in the afternoon. Sidebar: Once the interview is published in the magazine, I will blog about it in more depth and include more photos from the interview and visit to her home.

Erika and I had dinner in Spanish Harlem and spent the remainder of the night at Maxfish, on the Lower East Side. I looove the vibe at Maxfish. It's chill and they make one of the most amazing Tom Collins drinks I've ever had.... maraschino cherries and ere'thing! Plus, how can you not love a spot that plays a mix of Busta, then Jimi Hendrix, then Talib? Sold.

Thursday morning we grabbed breakfast and walked across the Manhattan Bridge for a butterflies-in-the-stomach-worthy view of the Brooklyn Bridge. When we made it to the end, we detoured to the BK Bridge so I could finally get a look at the Statue of Liberty. I'm not really thrilled about the Statue pics I got from the bridge so I'll get closer to her on my next visit and snap some proper ones.

Next stop was the Empire State Building. I wasn't really interested in riding to the top. I'm too impatient for line-ups...especially when there are sneakers to buy and parks to see. Priorities, right? Next on the do-it list was Times Square. As we made our approach, I asked Erika if she could watch out for cars because I knew my eyeballs would be everywhere but on the oncoming traffic. It was pretty incredible. Those red steps are soooo dope. Jay-Z & Alicia Keys made that spot a must-see.

No sneakerhead could walk past the world's largest Foot Locker without stopping by. You can bet I copped another pair for the collection. I'll be posting photos on Female Sneaker Fiend so stay locked!

Central Park was even more beautiful than I'd imagined. Erika's favorite spot there is the turtle pond. The venture there was defs worth it! We caught up with the super dope Amonee, a fellow FSF writer and nail art enthusiast, found the John Lennon tribute in Strawberry Fields and then went for dinner at Thai Son. If you're from Regina, you KNOW how amazing Viet Thai is, right? Well Thai Son is a must if you're in NYC. Amazing. Good lookin out, A-Money! Oh, and if you're into nail art, you best check out her blog, Chicken Under My Nails.

A-Money had to work the next morning so we said our see-yah-next-times and Erika and I hit headed down to Brooklyn. Questlove was spinnin' at Brooklyn Bowl so we showed up there to get our dance on. We ended the night eating popsicles and rat-watching on a bench in Greenpoint.

Earlier this year, after a long and productive conversation with my good friend/mentor Carlton Mackey I sat down and created a list of short and long term career goals. One of my long term goals was: "interview Martha Cooper". Less than a month after I created this list, the editor from C.O.P. Magazine asked me if I would like to interview Martha for the June issue.

On Thursday afternoon, I arrived at Martha Cooper's home in New York City with a list of questions, my camera and the 25th anniversary edition of Subway Art.

1:27am: Somewhere between Toronto and NYC

The time is 1:27am and I am New York City-bound. The purpose of my trip is to interview Martha Cooper for C.O.P. Magazine.

Have you ever read the book “The Secret” or at the very least have you heard about the law of attraction? If not, you should look into it. This is something I strongly believe in. Google it.

When I meet and converse with a new acquaintance, it usually comes up that I’ve travelled a lot and that I am associated with some crews of amazing people, artists and organizations. This is something I’m thankful for, every single day of my life.

I had a conversation with a lady I work with last week. She told me that every single hardship she has faced in her life, she survived through her strong faith in God. While I honestly do believe in God, I have an alternate outlook on facing struggles. For as far as I can remember, whenever I’ve been presented with a major challenge or loss, instead of praying, I’ve always talked myself through it by repeating something so simple: “You’re okay. You can do this.”

I'm not trying to say I don't believe in prayer.

Losing a friend, losing my Grandfather, facing a cancer scare, struggling with several major anxiety attacks: all of these are things I have overcome with strong belief in myself.

Know this: there is no reason you can’t achieve all of your dreams and goals. Switch up your way of thinking and you will remove so many obstacles in your life.

I’m not anywhere near accomplishing all of my own goals, of course. But as I write this, I am indeed on my way to New York City, to meet and interview of one of my personal role models.

The experiences I will have today, May 19th, 2010, are going to change my life forever. Money doesn’t buy that.

Several Banksy pieces popped up in T.O. over the weekend while he was in town for the opening of his documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. The last I heard, the count is at 7 but already 2 have been covered up.

This afternoon, I ventured out with my camera to check some out.

If they haven’t been chipped off the walls and auctioned on ebay by the time I have my next day off (Saturday), I’ll get snaps of the others.

Break Your Neck Urban Customs

Back in February when I was down in Los Angeles, I was strolling down Melrose and discovered a super dope custom shop. Break Your Neck Urban Customs is located at 7552 Melrose Avenue and has catered to the design wishes of A-list celebs and sneakerheads alike.

Founder/CEO/Artist Michael Norice was cool enough to let me take some photos in his shop. The BYN crew rolls about 10 deep and they'll customize pretty much anything you desire. Not only did they have some seriously dope kicks and tees on display, they've also been blingin' up Munny Dolls with crystals.

Fashawn: Boy Meets Toronto

Being branded as one of XXL Magazine's Freshman 10 is kinda like a big deal. It essentially means you're a major contender in a game called blowin' up the whole damn hip hop scene. One of twenny-ten's dimes is Fresno, Cali's very own Fashawn.

The 21 year old emcee has been touring to promote his debut album "Boy Meets World" since 2009 and has shared stages with Ghostface, The Grouch and currently, Brother Ali on "The Breakin' Dawn Tour". The tour stopped at Mod Club in Toronto last weekend.

A special thanks goes out to Union Events!

If you've slept on this kid, you need to get yourself in the know. "Boy Meets World" is a dope album, from start to finish. If he's playing a show in your town sometime soon, you need to get on that too. (For my L.A. peeps: he'll be at El Ray on May 6th. Don't sleep!)

I was surprised that "When She Calls" was included in his T.O. set. The track is a true story about Fashawn's good friend who committed suicide after he walked in on his girl cheating on him. Although the crowd showed mad love throughout the entire set, as soon as he began his introduction to the song, heads were so quiet you could hear a pin drop. He admitted afterwards that he'd never performed the track live and was grateful to see the crowd's response. The crowd responded alright....by offering their undivided attention and allowing him share his tragic story of losing a friend.

Little Dragon in Toronto

Little Dragon travelled all the way from Gothenburg, Sweden to perform at Toronto's Wrongbar on March 30th and I was fortunate enough to have been a part of the experience, in the front row. After VV Brown warmed up the crowd, Yukimi (vocals), Erik (drums), Fredrik (bass) and Hakan (keyboards) took the stage.

They began the set with Test and to be honest, I was completely mesmerized by Yukimi's stage presence that the only song I can 100% recall being played was Twice. If you've never heard of Little Dragon, Twice is definitely the song you should hear. You know how you have one of those songs that you reserve for listening to when you're seriously bummed out, missing someone, or doing any type of pining in general? Well, Twice is one of those songs for me. Perhaps you'll recognize it if you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, as it was played on one of the season 5 episodes.

Yukimi's voice is pure soul and beauty.

The first time I heard Mos Def's Ecstatic in its entirety, I was blown away, to say the least. Have you ever experienced what it feels like to fall in love with a song? The beauty of hearing one of these songs live is that every time you listen to it post-live, you'll immediately be taken back to the live experience. In some cases that's a bad thing, depending of course on how the performer did that day or night. In the case of History though, Mos Def delivered with an energy and passion that I relive the second I hear it now. January 28th, 2010, Key Club, front row, I was wearing a black and gold dress with black flats, my amazing friend Tina next to me, a Tom Collins in my hand. It's engrained in my memory.

When an artist writes a track or creates a beat, are they even remotely aware of the impact it will potentially have on a listener? I suppose the thought of that would add a lot of unnecessary pressure. Like Marvin said, "Music is my heart and soul, it's more precious than gold", it truly is. Music will never break my heart so I'll never be afraid to let myself fall in love with it.

I look forward to adding new loves to my list.

VV Brown is a singer/songwriter from Northampton, England. She's currently on tour with Little Dragon and I was front row center for the Toronto show at Wrongbar on Tuesday. Shout-outs to Becca Lemire and Shedoesthecity for hooking me up with a press pass! VV's stoked energy and attitude was present from start to finish. Her debut album "Traveling Like the Light" is now in stores and be sure to watch out for her on The Ellen Degeneres Show in a couple weeks.

Southern Hospitality

The definition according to Wikipedia: Southern hospitality is a phrase used in American English to describe the generalization that residents of the Southern United States are particularly warm and welcoming to visitors to their homes, or to the South in general.

Well, my trip from Los Angeles to Atlanta started off a little rocky because I had to say goodbye to one of my best friends. In some sick twist of fate, the second song that played on my iPod after I boarded the plane at LAX was Erykah Badu's Window Seat. The plane had triple seats and I was seated at the aisle. I was attempting to hide my tear-streamed cheeks by untucking my hair from behind my ears when the man at the window seat reached over, gave me the sweetest look of concern, and handed me a tissue. After I calmed down, I began talking to the lady in the middle seat - who happened to be Cookie Johnson, Magic's wife. We talked for the entire flight, about her new denim line, about being on Oprah, about being Magic's wife and a mother and also about music. Sidebar: She wasn't aware of Kanye's shout-out in Can't Tell Me Nothing ("And you can live through anything if Magic made it"). So it turned out to be a great flight after all.

Back to the point of this post though....

I've never done an actual count of how many cities I've travelled to but having visited 21 countries, I know it's a lot. I'm gonna go ahead and consider myself something of an expert when it comes to feeling out a city's vibe. From arrival to departure, I was shown so much love in Atlanta. Since I've already written a few posts about my time in the A, I'm going to shut up and let these 26 photos do all the talking. This collection is from a shoot for my upcoming book on positive hip hop lyrics. Although these images are separate from the ones that will appear in the book, I wanted to share with you, an album of 25 amazing people I had the pleasure of meeting in Atlanta. The shoot took place in Little Five Points, in front of Criminal Records. Specials thanks goes out to Adam and his staff for allowing us to post up in front of the store.

I'm talking about those really amazing surprises. For example: your friends take you to a hip-hop club in Atlanta, you walk in and a LEGENDARY DJ is spinning.

Yup. It all went off at MJQ (736 Ponce de Leon, Atlanta, GA)!!

DJ Rasta Root is Canadian-born, resides in ATL and is doing MAJOR things with his musical talents. He is co-founder of Smokin' Needles Records (along with Phife) and has brought his best to audiences in Canada, USA, Japan, Europe, Philippines and the Caribbean. He's opened shows for Nas, Wu-Tang, Redman, Busta Rhymes and is currently on tour in Europe with Phife Dawg (A Tribe Called Quest) and Chip Fu (Fu-Schnickens).

According to the bio section on Root's myspace, "Of course he will be in contention for beat placement on the highly anticipated reunion album by A Tribe Called Quest."

You should watch today's episode of Maestro Knows.

I've been a fan of Maestro's online show since, well, pretty close to the start. Levi Maestro is a skateboarder and filmmaker from Los Angeles. The show started off as day-in-the-life/reality show style but this season in particular, has branched into something more in depth. He travels the globe, to meet with young artists and entrepreneurs. He showcases their work and focuses on the motivational aspect of what exactly the artist is doing. Levi's short videos are incredible to watch and to top them off, they're backed with really good music. So good that DJ Sour Milk recently mixed the Maestro Knows Season 2 soundtrack. MK's commentary is especially what needs to be mentioned here. Early on in the first season, the camera was on him a lot of the time. More and more, he turned the camera away and instead let the visuals of his beautiful surroundings and inspiring artists take over. It's truly a pleasure to hear his descriptive accounts of each experience.

Personally, there are so many artists and people who have inspired me to not only arrive where I am right now but to maintain the drive I need to keep going. Adrift Da Belle

I caught an appearance by Adrift Da Belle at MJQ nightclub in Atlanta a few weeks back. To put it straight, she got on the mic and killed it! I've got so much respect for ladies who bring it, in any aspect of hip hop.

Adrift was born in Georgia, raised in Jersey, has returned to the A and is backed by Minds of Organized Noize Productions and the Dungeon Family. She recently unleashed her second album "Garden State Parkway" and even played a supporting role in an indie film titled "Pathways", which is to be released this summer. A Day at the Fair

While I was down in Atlanta, I was asked to do a shoot with a very special couple that I respect and admire. Kari and Carlton Mackey are a very inspiring team. They are both educated professionals and also run their own photography company, Vision Photography.

Upon meeting them, it was instantly clear that Kari and Carlton have one of those relationships that so many people are currently out there searching for. They are not only husband and wife. They are best friends.

It was my goal to capture that connection for Kari and Carlton to see.

Sidebar: When I was editing this project I had Anthony Hamilton's discography on high rotation. Bliss. I want the kind of love that Anthony sings about. As a photographer shooting 2 professional photographers, no doubt the bar was set high for me. Carlton came up with the idea to shoot at the Atlanta Fair, which happened to be in town that weekend. So that's what we did. Picked up a stack of tickets, played some games, went on rides, ate some junk food and laughed until our stomaches ached.

I've had this song in my head all day! If you've never heard of Mayer Hawthorne, you really should check out his music. He's signed to Stonesthrow Records, the same label as J. Dilla (Rest in Beats). I really love this video too. The style in which it was captured and I love his interaction with the people. The video was filmed in Venice Beach, where I also shot part of my I...I'm Sky High project. Venice has such a good vibe. Notice the guy with the guitar on roller skates? He was definitely down at the beach when I was there a couple weeks ago! He's a regular.
On a nice day, it's so bomb to go out there, grab a slice and go for a walk. I bought these dope stickers from a vendor there.

Sidebar: Yes, Marilyn's tatt reads "Only God Can Judge Me", Tupac-style.

Now...where to put them?

If you recognize the song, it's because "Maybe So Maybe No" was originally recorded back in 1969 by The New Holidays. Mr. Hawthorne is on tour and will be stopping in Toronto on March 27th. Best believe I will be there!

Definition of Fresh

I flew down to Atlanta on March 4th for a photo shoot with up-and-coming hip-hop artist, Joshua Watkins. I came up with the concept, which was Definition of Fresh. I thought up a list of things that I associated with the word "fresh" and shot Josh in scenarios based around them. We used a lot of different locations in ATL and being my first time there, it was a bomb way for me to discover spots I definitely wouldn't have laid eyes on otherwise.

When I arrived in the A, Josh had a big surprise for me. He wrote and recorded a track called "Definition of Fresh"!! He put it together in 1 day - the day before my arrival. The track, laid on an Alex Goose beat, is dope and will be used as the soundtrack for a behind-the-scenes video shot and produced by Carlton Mackey @ Vision Philms. It's essentially a "Making of: The Definition of Fresh" video. I love that Josh came up with a track and Carlton came with it and created a video. It's like, an ultimate collaboration in 3 mediums.

I had so much fun working with Carlton and Josh and I'm stoked to have the video as a permanent reminder of how rad the whole day was and how lucky I was to have had this experience.

I...I'm Sky High: Los Angeles

I've briefly touched on my upcoming book entitled "I...I'm Sky High". To get a little more into it, without giving too much away, it's a series of photos of people in several different cities. The project revolves around motivational/positive hip-hop lyrics. So far, I've shot the project in my home city of Regina, Saskatchewan, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.

The shoot in LA definitely exceeded my expectations. I knew that by walking down Melrose Ave, I'd run into plenty of people who would take part. Later in the afternoon we drove out to Venice Beach and that is where it really got down. The chilled out beach culture, skateboards, artists...just a good vibe in general!

Next stop: my new city, Toronto.

Guess who's back in tha house...with a bunch of souvenirs and a smile for your mouth

Where do I even begin? Los Angeles was amazing, as usual. I escaped the frigid Canadian climate and spent 5 weeks in one of my favorite cities. I worked on several projects that I'm anxious to share with you. The first was an interview with an up-and-coming female hip-hop artist who was recently signed to Warner Records. The interview is for C.O.P. Magazine - a ladies art & street culture magazine based in Australia. The interview and shoot went well and I'm definitely excited to see it in print.

On top of my workload, I had time for all kinds of fun stuff. The highlights were: being in the front row at the Mos Def show, the Lakers vs. the 76ers game, 2 Steel Panther shows (hahaha), a Curtiss King show, a weekend trip to San Francisco, Knotts Berry Farm (we rode every single roller coaster!) and LA Art Walk - more specifically the Paper Dolls exhibit at Upper Playground.

I had the pleasure of shooting one of my very best friends: Girleecat. We met in 2002 in London, England. We ended up being roommates there and our friendship has been goin' strong ever since. I had so much fun with the shoot. Nina McArthur really did a great job on hair and make-up. One of the locations we used was just so amazing! It's a used furniture store owned by Nick Metropolis and it's located at 100 S. La Brea (just a few doors down from Stussy). You can view the full album on my website but here's a peek:

Big ups to Carlton @ Vision Photography for cookin up this poster for my new big project. I'm nearly finished shooting in my city, then I'll be moving on to LA, Atlanta and then Toronto. I hope to have the book published in late 2010/early 2011.

So far I've had a really amazing time with all the people involved and I'm only a quarter of the way in!

In case you didn't know, February is J Dilla Month. Jay Dee was born on February 7th, 1974 and made his journey to heaven on February 10th, 2006. Try and listen to at least 1 Dilla track a day. Throw some Slum Village in the mix. Trust me, you will feel richer for doing so. Dilla was, is and will always be a legend. He created the beat for one of my all-time favorite joints, "The Light" by Common.

Too much has been going on lately. Hold up....I would take too much over not enough any day! I'm fixin to head down to LA for a month and then on to Atlanta and then Toronto. I can't think of a better jump-off for 2010.

Big-ups to Blogspot, in a huuuuge way. I created this blog exactly 1 year ago. I had moved back to my hometown, from Vancouver and had a lot of spare time. In a year's time I have made some seriously dope friends via cupcakesandmixtapes. I'm now writing for C.O.P. Magazine, have 2 photo shoots lined up with dope musicians in LA, had one of my photos published online at Sneakhype, have a collab planned with some amazing artists (more details coming soon!) in Atlanta. Post Christmas reflects

My Christmas was pretty weak this year. It seems like every year I get older, the holiday season just isn't as sparkly and stoked as it used to be. In all fairness, it was pretty tough to be psyched for the season, knowing that in just a month, I'll be down in dope, sunny LA!

One thing I do love about my family's Christmas is the baking. I whipped up a couple dozen cupcakes that one of my guy friends referred to as "heaven with icing". I know he wasn't just saying that to be nice cuz I watched him wolf down like 4 of em in 1 day.

I used to work for United Way and helped organize a dinner for homeless people in our community. Well, not homeless specifically. It is for those who otherwise wouldn't have a Christmas dinner. I am no longer employed by the organization but I still volunteer. We fed close to 2000 people this year. Being a part of an event such as this is such a humbling experience. On Christmas eve, at the dinner table with my family, I was asked to say grace. Instead of the traditional thang, I went ahead and gave a toast which reflected on my gratitude and all the wonderful people I met at the Christmas dinner a few days earlier.

Be grateful, always.

I've been neglecting this blog in a huuuge way! The magazine's blog has been getting crazy mad love so I've been focusing my attention on that, to be honest.
Also, I'm in the planning stage of a fresh new art project. I can't wait to get into it! It involves hip hop, photography and dreams. I'm aiming to release it shortly after Christmas.

I woke up feeling really under the weather today. Cold, then hot, then shivering, then sweating. But, because I'm a soldier, I still went to work. My boss could tell by taking one look at me, that my health situation was sub-par today. By that, I mean, I normally at least wear make-up and brush my hair for work. This morning I lost the battle against my energy levels and went in make-up less, with my hair looking like a 20 year old, matted halloween wig. I was wearing a pretty wack-ass outfit too, but I won't get into that. Okay, I will. I was rocking a Rangers sweatshirt, purple scarf, dunks, and boyfriend jeans because they felt the most like sweatpants. I couldn't be bothered to throw my contacts in so on top of this busted rainbow bright get-up, I had my big white glasses on. He let me go back home. So, I'm trying to not think I have H1N1 or something absurd like that. I had a good long nap and have spent the rest of the day watching season 3 of Fresh Prince. Remember the one when the Banks fam goes to the hood to help clean up? Will and Carlton spotted that hot broad at the same time and Will beetled up to her all, "Yo baby! Whassup? Gimme yo number before I don't want it anymore!" Haha sooo good.

Since I'm moving soon and will have to part with the stacks of magazines I've collected this year, I'm in the process of shredding them....cutting and tearing out bits and pieces for my scrapbook. When I say scrapbook, I'm not referring to me sitting at a table with a bunch of different coloured paper, stickers, stamps and glitter..but it's really just a light binder with plastic sleeves. I started it before I went to film school last fall and it mostly consisted of ads with lighting I love, make-up/hair/wardrobe inspiration, etc. If I don't feel better by bedtime, I'm thinking that tomorrow will be a day full of sleep, tea, more cutting and shredding and of course, season 4.
